LVR Livestock Brands’ fire dehorners provide a tried-and-true method for ranchers to remove horns from beef cattle and other livestock. This is critical for preserving the health and safety of animals, as it prevents them from hurting each other when crowded together in close quarters. Fire dehorners and searing irons are heated manually over an open flame. Once they are at the proper temperature, the dehorner is applied to the hair ring around the horn buds of calves and kids to cauterize the blood vessels to prevent the blood vessels from feeding the horn. For the best results, it’s recommended that ranchers perform hot-iron dehorning on young calves and kids up to three months of age. The fire searing irons are used to cauterize the blood vessels after the horns are removed by means of cutting or gouging which prevents excessive bleeding.  The fire searing iron is used for cattle when dehorning wasn’t done at an early age and cutting was necessary.

Product Features and Options

We offer ¾” fire dehorners as well as 1” models along with searing irons. These also can be purchased in a complete set to provide ranchers with all the tools they need. Our tools are made with pride in the United States and feature stainless steel construction for maximum durability and corrosion resistance. Because we’re also ranchers ourselves, we’ve designed these tools to fit comfortably in the hand and heat evenly for reliable cauterization even over long sessions.

Benefits and Applications

One of the biggest reasons ranchers appreciate our fire dehorners is that they’re simple tools that don’t require a power source. Anywhere there’s an open flame, they can be ready to use in minutes. Their simplicity also makes them a lower-cost alternative to electric dehorners, and their dependability makes them preferable to dehorning paste and other options. However, the fact that they’re heated with open flame means they may take longer to use than electric tools. That’s why we also offer electric dehorners to provide ranchers with the option to choose the tool that’s the best fit for their needs.
