Electric Branding Iron FAQs — Sizing, Heat-Up, Power, Care

What is the difference between 3/8” and 3/16” electric brand elements?

The 3/8” element is the most commonly used element and run twice as hot the 3/16” element. The 3/16’ element is intended primarily for calves under 400 pounds or horses. It can also be a good option to size down a very large branding iron design.

How long does an electric brand take to heat up?

An electric brand will take no more than 2 minutes to heat and be ready for branding.

What is the power source?

Our electric brands are to be plugged into a 120-volt outlet only. They should also be plugged into a circuit without a ground fault interrupter (GFI) of (GFCI).

What size brand should I order for calves, yearlings, or mature cattle?

We recommend using brands sized between 2.5” and 3” for calves, 3” to 4” for yearlings, and 4” to 5” for mature cattle. Our experts can help you choose the right brands for your livestock.

Do I need to register my brand, and how do state brand laws work?

Brands must be registered for them to be effective at preventing theft, and the laws vary from state to state. In some cases, the brand must be registered with the state, but in others there is a county-level registry. It’s best to research the laws where you operate to ensure your operations are compliant.

How does electric branding compare to fire or freeze branding?

Electric brands heat up faster and more evenly than fire brands, although they do require access to power. Freeze brands work best on dark hides because they destroy pigment-producing cells, leaving white hair to grow back. Because they brand using heat, electric brands are a better choice for animals with lighter-colored hides.

What is the return policy for electric brands?

Custom orders are non-refundable, which is why we highly recommend making sure your design will work before submitting it. If you have questions about your design, our experts are willing to discuss it with you.

How do I clean and maintain my electric branding iron?

We recommend cleaning the head of the iron with a brass brush after it cools down, to remove any residue. Never submerge your electric branding iron in water. Make sure to inspect the cord before use to make sure it is not frayed or missing any insulation. When you’re finished using it, store the iron in a dry place.
